CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2011

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, a man whose life and example established a set of values which remain today as the foundations for a good life and consideration of others.

In this context, Australia is truly a lucky country and while many have experienced extremely tough times in the past year we should always pause and think of those even worse off than us, here and overseas including our soldiers who are representing our nation in several theatres of conflict.

Many of our friends and neighbours experienced serious flooding in early 2011 that devastated grain and horticultural crops, submerged homes and ruined roads and bridges in Mallee Electorate. Full praise must go to our emergency services, councils and volunteers who quickly responded to these adversities.

Adding to our adversity, a high Australian dollar devalued table grapes, oranges and wine even before those products left our shores and then economic uncertainty in Europe impacted on many retiree superannuation incomes.

With all that has passed in 2011, it must be time things changed for the better, and that is my wish.

Christmas, more than ever, will be a time for all people to embrace, to celebrate, to call on neighbours and to give comfort to those in need.

It will be a time to help keep our regional economies going, buy locally, patronise restaurants and local shops, and extend the hand of friendship and hospitality to visitors so they feel welcome, stay longer and return again.

We can all hold our heads high, be proud of where we live, enjoy the company of others and build community, personal and business friendships to help us weather international events beyond our control.

Take care on our roads, have a break if tired, keep laughing, shrug off adversity and if out in the bush camping or yabbying, be sure to observe all fire restrictions.

May all people enjoy a blessed Christmas inspired by he whose birthday we celebrate, and look forward to an exciting, successful and rewarding New Year.
