INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY 2011

The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee John Forrest says International Volunteer Day on Monday is an opportunity to thank all volunteers for their ongoing contribution and achievement.
“Volunteers are the glue that holds our communities together, and the valuable contribution they make to our country is immense in good times and bad,” Mr Forrest said.
“They are often the quiet achievers putting something back into the place where they live, working selflessly and not seeking praise, just doing what needs to be done.
“In the floods earlier this year that impacted on eight of the nine municipalities in Mallee Electorate, our volunteers really came to the fore in helping victims cope in the immediate emergency and after.
“Volunteering can give great satisfaction in a job well done, for the young and the old, and their good works enrich communities in many ways. Volunteering could be helping with Meals on Wheels, the local show, football, netball or cricket clubs, the Red Cross, hospital visits or membership of a service club.”
Mr Forrest said more than 5.4 million Australians give up some of their time to volunteer, contributing 700 million hours of voluntary work each year.
