INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY 2011

The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee John Forrest has welcomed International Day of People with Disability 2011 as a chance to promote Australia’s proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
“International Day of People with Disability is celebrated globally on the 3 December every year,” Mr Forrest said.
“The day gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution Australians with disability make to our community and also reminds us there is an urgent need to fix the current system of support for those who are disabled.”
Mr Forrest said International Day of People with Disability seeks to advance society’s understanding of the challenges faced by people with disability, and aims to highlight the importance of supporting people with disability to live a life of dignity.
“International Day of People with Disability is a way for Australians to work towards an inclusive society in which people with disability are able to fully participate,” he said.
“The National Disability Insurance Scheme for Australia proposal is a step in the right direction to achieve this and has the in-principle support of the Coalition because most cannot afford the cost of lifetime care when a family member is significantly disabled.
“At this stage, the Federal Government has announced that all State and Territory governments have agreed to lay the foundations for a National Disability Insurance Scheme by mid 2013. At this time, there is no indication when the required legislation might go before Federal Parliament.
“Disability can happen to anyone. Nobody wants to be seen as a victim or recipient of welfare and charity but they do need help and such a scheme would provide assistance with dignity and help them reach their full potential.
“NDIS promises substantial change in the way people with a disability, their families and carers, are supported in this country. It will transform the way services are funded and delivered and give the recipient greater choice and control.
“People with a disability, their families and carers know only too well the daily struggle for services and support and how often the Australian system has failed to deliver essential services,” Mr Forrest said.
