Today, we celebrate our land, our people, our diversity, our cultures, our freedom and democracy, and our belief in a fair go for all.
These qualities built our nation and endowed us with great purpose, a work ethic and a desire to make things even better for future generations.
Australia Day is a time to look forward, but also to reflect on the efforts of previous generations and the contributions our new citizens will bring.
Consider the privilege and benefit of being Australian, a nation where people from different backgrounds are able to live in peace and share in all our country has to offer.
We will respond to the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Our character will help sustain our people through these difficult times because it is then, that the generosity of the Australian spirit is always at its best.
My admiration goes to our Australian armed services for their special qualities, who for more than a century have been prepared to defend the values we treasure. Our freedom has come at a huge price.
Our unique Australian system of Westminster democracy, our constitution and our flag have served our country well.
We must continue to be vigilant and to build on the past achievements to ensure our country remains great in the future.
Regional Australia has endured many difficult seasons with resilience and pride. We can all do our bit to get through by being Australian, buying Australian and especially, supporting our own locality and neighbours.
Australia Day is a great opportunity to celebrate our great nation and values, and I extol all to participate and celebrate the freedom, lifestyle and security we are so fortunate to enjoy.
