BUSINESSES MUST PREPARE FOR AWARD CHANGESEmail this pageBack

The Nationals Member for Mallee John Forrest has warned the Rudd Government’s so-called “modern award” system becomes law on January 1, 2010.
“Some of these awards were only finalised in early December, giving business less than one month to learn about the new minimum terms and conditions that will apply to staff,” Mr Forrest said.
“In some instances, these new ‘modern’ awards have reduced the number of hours your employees can work in one week, or have increased minimum rates of pay, penalty rates, allowances and loadings.
“There are also new obligations to consult with unions before making any change to a business.”
Mr Forrest said Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard had promised the “modern awards” would not increase labour costs for business.
He said the Coalition had tried to change the new laws in an effort to save jobs and help small business, in particular, recover from difficult times.
“Labor voted against our changes every step of the way,” Mr Forrest said.
“I’m concerned the Rudd Government has not done enough to highlight these new laws, and therefore, I urge businesses to do their homework on how to comply, including visiting www.fwa.gov.au, or by contacting your local business chamber or accountant.”

Mr Forrest said the reality was that many workers and businesses were still in the dark about the new laws, and time was running out.
“This really is a ticking time bomb for business and I would encourage everyone to make sure they are ready for the new laws and don’t get caught out,” Mr Forrest said.

Mr Forrest can be contacted on 0428 500 186.
